Registering DNS Zones

When statistics are enabled on the BIND9 server, Admin4 will extract and register zones automatically; manual registration isn't available.

When Admin4 isn't able to read the server statistics, you can add zones manually, using the context menu on the server or zone object.

  • To add a zone to the DNS server object, enter the name of the zone, e.g. "homenet.local".
  • To add a sub zone to a zone object, enter the subzone name only, e.g. "machines". It will register the zone "machines.homenet.local".
  • To add a IPV4 reverse zone to the DNS server object, enter the IP address part, e.g. "192.168". It will automatically convert to the canonical "168.192.in-addr.arpa".
  • To add a IPV6 reverse zone to the DNS server object, enter the IP address part, e.g. "13:666a:0/36". It will automatically convert to the canonical "0.a.6.6.6.3.1.0.0.ip6.arpa".
  • To add a sub zone to a reverse zone object, enter the subzone address only, e.g. "3". It will register the reverse zone "3.0.a.6.6.6.3.1.0.0.ip6.arpa".

Please note that currently the zone isn't checked upon registration, so you might get a "Couldn't transfer zone" error and "Zone not available" when actually accessing it.
